A cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world. It is estimated that in 1998, cataract was the cause of blindness in 20 million people worldwide. Cataract surgery is required by 30 million people a year, but only 10 million manage to have surgery. Today’s technology is modern, pretty safe and gives completely predictable results, and it is recommended to be operate when cataract begins to bother normal life and work.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an established diagnostic method that enables consideration of cross-sections of the inner structure of the tissue by measuring the echo time delay and the intensity of the reflected light against the tissue structure. In this way “optical biopsy” of the tissue is achieved without excision and visualization of tissue morphology in real time, under the control of the examiner.

Age-related macular degeneration (Age Related Macular Degeneration) is the leading cause of blindness in developed countries and one of the leading ophthalmic problems of modern ophthalmology. The risk of this disease increases significantly with ageing. In the population aged between 65 to 75 it is found in 10%, while in population over 75 the risk is with 35%.
